The players drafted over the weekend haven’t even stepped on the field yet, but they already helped to set an NFL record. There were 33 trades during the two days of the draft, which was the most of any draft in history breaking the old record of 20 in 2004.

Teams were on their toes throughout the draft, as reported by ESPN.com:

The swap meet got under way when the New England Patriots traded down from the seventh spot on Saturday, giving it to the New Orleans Saints along with its fifth-rounder in exchange for the Saints' No. 10 overall and a third-rounder. The Saints used the pick to take defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis from Southern California.

An even dozen trades came in the first two rounds on Saturday. Sunday, fittingly, began with a trade, as the Detroit Lions moved up to begin the day by taking running back Kevin Smith, who almost broke the college rushing record of former Lions star Barry Sanders.

At one point the New York Jets traded themselves a pick. On Saturday, the Jets traded up to the Green Bay Packers’ No. 30 spot, giving up their second rounder and their fourth-rounder, No. 113 overall.

The Jets also traded to get that pick back from the Packers to select Dwight Lowery from San Jose State.

The Cleveland Browns copied the Jets’ move in the sixth round when they traded with Philadelphia to get their pick back to draft Paul Hubbard from Wisconsin.
