The NFL has announced that Jeffrey Miller, the commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police and a 24-year veteran of law enforcement, has been appointed to the newly created position of NFL director of strategic security. In his new role, the 45-year-old Miller will report to NFL Vice President of Security Milt Ahlerich and administer programs involving stadium security, including fan safety, fan conduct, and use of electronic equipment by the league and clubs during games. Miller has been commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police since being appointed by Governor Ed Rendell in 2003. In that role, he commanded the ninth-largest police agency in the United States, overseeing a statewide complement of more than 6,400 enlisted and civilian employees, including 4,600 state police troopers. Miller began in law enforcement in 1984 as a patrol unit officer for the Pennsylvania State Police and held several other positions in the Pennsylvania State Police prior to his appointment as the state police commissioner. A graduate of Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, he has a master’s degree from Penn State University in public administration and has completed numerous government and law enforcement programs at institutions ranging from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to Harvard University. Miller will begin his new position at the NFL in mid-August.
