In the wake of the stunning and sudden news that NFLPA Executive Director Gene Upshaw has died, the NFLPA Executive Committee today appointed NFLPA General Counsel Richard Berthelsen as interim Executive Director.
The Executive Committee met by conference call at noon eastern time today and shared their deep sorrow at the sudden passing of Gene Upshaw, their leader for the past 25 years. Berthelsen has been the longtime NFLPA General Counsel and served as an active member of the union’s negotiating committee for the past 37 years. NFLPA Player President Kevin Mawae said in a statement, “Gene was a leader, mentor and friend to me and many others throughout his lifetime. Today is a sad day for all those who knew him. As Gene would have wanted, the NFL Players Association will continue to move forward in making the NFL the greatest professional sports league in the country.” Source: NFL Players Association OTHER NEWS ACROSS THE BUSINESS OF SPORTS NETWORK
