It was a game that many thought might be a blowout. The Cardinals, after all, weren’t supposed to make it the Super Bowl in the first place. It wound up being a classic. What looked like a possible blowout by the Steelers turned into a dogfight in the end with fantastic play after fantastic play. The fourth quarter may go down as one of the greatest in Super Bowl history with the game being decided with less than a minute to play. To start with, Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald hooked up for a 64 yard touchdown play that, if that had been the end of the game, would have marked the biggest comeback win in Super Bowl history, putting the Cardinals up 23-20 after penalty call in the endzone got them within four points. The Steelers took over with 2:47 to go. The game had all the shades of the NFC Championship game two weeks prior between the Eagles and Cardinals. The unthinkable had happened with the comeback. The Steelers then proceeded to dig for every catch. Time and time again, Ben Roethlisberger appeared to be on the verge of being sacked, only to find receivers open down field. In just over 2 minutes, it was over. Santonio Holmes became the hero of the game, first by collecting a 40-yeard catch to get the Steelers to the 6-yard line, and then a TD catch with 35 seconds remaining in the end zone that was nothing short of spectacular. The catch, a top-tapper in the far right corner of the end zone, found not one, not two, but three Cardinals defenders blanketing him. It will go down as one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history. Kurt Warner and the Cardinals tried to make a last ditch chance to get into the end zone, with the final play of the game, a questionable fumble in which Warner’s arm was in motion. The Super Bowl win marks a record sixth for the Steelers. Holmes was rewarded for his 9 catches for 131 yards and late game heroics with the Super Bowl MVP.
