NFLEven with the downturn in the economy, layoffs in the league, and Commissioner Goodell taking a 20 percent pay cut, the NFL’s salary cap will increase to $127 million for the upcoming season.

According to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network, teams were notified Wednesday that the cap will increase by over $4 million, thus placing the cap for 2009 at $127 million. The reason? Teams did not spend as much as they were supposed to under the current collective bargaining agreement. The CBA is flexible in that the cap moves down if teams spend over the cap limit, and moves up if they spend under the cap limit.

According to Schefter, this benefits the Colts and Panthers as they were bumped up against the cap going into the upcoming season.
