The UFL’s tag-line is “Where Future Stars Come to Play!” Interesting considering that four out of the top five passers in the four team league are NFLers of the past. But, despite quarterbacks Brooks Bollinger, JP Losman, Quinn Gray and Mike McMahon’s NFL names, the UFL is failing to sell seats. The average attendance for a UFL game this year is just under 12,000 per game. The California Redwoods, playing at San Francisco’s AT&T Park drew just 6,341 for their Oct. 17 game.
Florida Tuskers coach, former New Orleans Saints head coach, Jim Haslett says the league didn’t market well enough. Owners say they are trying, even booking pre-game concerts by top-notch artists, but so far, it’s not working. Commissioner Michael Huyhgue said playing on different nights could be a reason for the lack of tangible success. But, Huyhgue says the poor attendance won’t affect the league just yet. The UFL plans to expand to two more teams next season.
The UFL does benefit from having a TV contract through 2010 with a network, Versus, who does not expect high ratings. According to examiner.com writer Josh Lobdell, the contract is worth $35 million. The Versus network has only reported its Oct. 8 opening night TV numbers, which was an estimated 220,000 viewers. Compare the to the XFL, which drew almost 14 million for its opening night.
But, even if the league does expand, there are problems which appear insurmountable at this point: first, the league’s season matches up against MLB playoffs, the NFL, the NBA and NHL, so media coverage has been non-existent. Branding is another difficulty. As Maury Brown outlined in his piece about the UFL before the season, the color scheme, team names and logos are poorly designed. Name recognition is the foundation for a league’s success, the UFL appears to not have succeeded in this category.
Yet, UFL general manager Rick Mueller says in 2010 the league will expand to six teams and play a 10-game season.

The United Football League officially unveiled its helmet art, which features the teams’ primary logos, today for its four franchises – the California Redwoods, Florida Tuskers, Las Vegas Locomotives and New York Sentinels. The UFL kicks off its “Premiere” season on Thursday, October 8th, at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas where the Locos host the Redwoods.

“We are very proud of the designs of the teams’ helmet logos and feel that they truly convey the personalities of the team names and their relevance to the local markets,” said Frank Vuono, COO of the UFL. “Each team mark is distinctive, yet still carries the League’s unifying theme of tradition with innovation. Ron Caruso, of Purepartner, did an outstanding job of creating both the teams’ helmet logos and the uniform design for the UFL’s ‘Premiere’ season. Our uniforms will evolve in our second season with colors and designs which reflect the team names and logos. We believe we have given our fans team marks they can rally behind and ultimately wear proudly in support of their UFL teams.”
The inspiration behind the design of the California Redwoods logo is to communicate the majesty of the world’s tallest living thing, reaching to the sky with strength and stability. The primary mark utilizes references of tree textures and takes inspiration from the crests and shields indicative of our many parks and wildlife destinations. A stylized “R” cutting through the shield introduces the speed, agility and excitement to the mark.
The “Tusker” boar, native to the Florida wild, is known for its toughness, intelligence, quickness and ferocity. The logo for this Florida franchise translates signature characteristics of this unique animal including its “ridge,” tusks and snout into proud, strong and imposing symbols to represent the team.
The Las Vegas Locos logo was developed to illustrate the convergence of Las Vegas’ origins as a railroad town and its evolution into the entertainment capital of the world. An abstraction of a steam engine cattle catcher meeting the current excitement of the city today, the Locos’ logo reflects the spirit of “getting a little wild in Vegas.”
A Sentinel is defined as “one who stands guard”, and the logo for the New York franchise is inspired by the presence of the mythical and real heroes which stand guard to protect the City of New York. The shield represents strength and stability, and the heroic angels reference the imposing scale of its landscape, aspiring upward as a tribute to the overall spirit of New Yorkers.
The UFL’s first game on October 8th will be broadcast on VERSUS at 9:00 pm ET. On Saturday, October 10th, the Florida Tuskers will host the New York Sentinels at the Citrus Bowl. This game will be broadcast on HDNet at 7:00 pm ET.

The United Football League announced today that StubHub will be one of the League’s “Premiere” Season Foundation Partners and the UFL’s exclusive corporate partner for secondary ticketing. StubHub will be promoted as the League’s preferred resale destination for fans. Tickets for the inaugural season are on sale now and will soon also be available at StubHub.
“When seeking Foundation Partners for the UFL, we were looking for companies who wanted to take an integrated and innovative approach with us and StubHub more than fits this criteria,” said Frank Vuono, COO of the UFL. “We will integrate StubHub into the overall fabric of the League by providing them with the traditional sponsorship and media elements as well as on-field and on-helmet exposure during all of our national telecasts. We have an opportunity to provide our corporate partners with a truly vertical and ambush free partnership model that is unprecedented in professional sports.”
As a Foundation Partner of the UFL, StubHub’s logo will be prominently displayed on the front bumper of the Florida Tuskers’ helmet. StubHub will also be included on ANC’s on-field LED rotational signage and receive commercial inventory on the VERSUS and HDNet telecasts. In return, the UFL will be featured on StubHub’s website for cross-promotions and for co-branded incentive programs which are still being finalized.
“The UFL presents a unique and compelling opportunity for us to reach out to a new fan base in a very prominent fashion,” said Danielle Maged, Head of Partnerships for StubHub. “The league offers an affordable and quality football product at a time fans are faced with difficult choices. This partnership is a natural extension of our involvement with all sports teams and leagues, and brings strong brand visibility and growth opportunity.”

The United Football League announced today that former President of Northwestern University Henry Bienen, has been named Chairman of the UFL’s Board of Directors. As Chairman, Mr. Bienen will oversee the Board which is comprised of the team owners and UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue.
“When seeking a Chairman to lead the UFL’s Board of Directors, we specifically wanted someone who had gained success in other disciplines and could look at our League objectively,” said UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue. “We are impressed with the leadership role Henry Bienen displayed at Northwestern which resulted in the university’s growth academically and financially. The fact that his football team achieved high levels of success and lucrative television revenues under his stewardship is further evidence that Henry will be a tremendous asset to the UFL in his role of Chairman.”
During Mr. Bienen’s 14-year tenure as president of Northwestern, applications for admission nearly doubled and the number of National Merit Scholars increased substantially. Mr. Bienen is also responsible for growing sponsored research funding from $173 million to approximately $430 million. Additionally, Northwestern’s endowment has more than quadrupled from $1.4 billion in 1995 to more than $5.5 billion today. Northwestern’s football team also qualified for six Bowl appearances during Mr. Bienen’s reign, including a 1996 trip to the Rose Bowl – a first in almost 50 years. In 2005, Mr. Bienen was one of the first three university presidents awarded the Carnegie Corporation Academic Leadership Award for innovative leadership. Mr. Bienen also serves as Chair of the Nominating & Governance Committee of the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of its executive committee as well as Chair of the Board of Ithaka Harbors, Inc.
“I am very excited about becoming Chairman of the UFL’s Executive Board; it is a great venture, with an interesting business plan,” said Mr. Bienen. “I believe the League will bring high quality, affordable professional football to new communities. I am happy to be a part of this effort.”
Mr. Bienen will retire from his role as President on August 31st and become Vice Chairman of the Rasmussen College, Inc. Board of Directors on September 1st. Rasmussen College, Inc. owns and operates two divisions – Rasmussen College and Deltak edu. Rasumussen College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and offers Baccalaureate and Associate’s degrees online and through 17 campuses located throughout the Midwest and Florida. Deltak edu offers online Master’s and Doctoral degrees in partnership with 14 leading universities.

At a press conference today, United Football League Commissioner Michael Huyghue announced the New York franchise will be named the Sentinels and unveiled innovative team uniforms showcasing the Sentinels’ “Premiere” season colors of black, silver and green. The name “Sentinels” was selected after more than thirty thousand fan entries and interpretation from industry experts and an in-house creative team on what attributes the fans were seeking with their submissions. New York Sentinels Owner Bill Mayer and Sentinels Head Coach Ted Cottrell were also in attendance at the press event.
“It was critical to us that we took our time in selecting team names that we felt best reflected the local community while simultaneously defining the personality of the team,” said Commissioner Huyghue. “When selecting a name for the New York franchise, we wanted to pay homage to the individuals who protect the city including the NYPD, FDNY, the Port Authority and so many other dedicated organizations who bravely watch over the city.”
Previously, the UFL announced Miami-based GameWear Team Sports as the League’s official uniform supplier. Award-winning designer Ron Caruso of Purepartner created all the teams’ uniforms using derivatives of the official League logo for all the designs while making each one distinctive.
Yesterday, the United Football League announced the Florida Tuskers. Earlier in the week, the United Football League introduced the Las Vegas Locomotives and the California Redwoods. A complete listing of team names and photos of uniforms will be available on the League’s website, www.ufl-football.com, along with pictures and video from the press events.
“We are extremely pleased with the names selected for all of our teams and the overall “Premiere” season uniform design,” said Frank Vuono, COO of the UFL. “Name selection for a new sports franchise can be an arduous process having to take into account the disqualification of many great possibilities due to trademark and copyright infringements. There was a team of experts including Charley Inc., Bendigo Company, GameWear Team Sports, Ron Caruso and Purepartner who assisted in the name selection and uniform design processes and we are grateful for all of their hard work.”
The UFL launched its Name the Team Campaign with the redesign of its website in February. From that time, more than thirty thousand entries were submitted. Fans who submitted the selected names will be notified and given the appropriate credit.
Mayer also announced that the Sentinels will play its three home games in its “Premiere” season at Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex on October 29th, Hofstra University on November 4th and Rentschler Field in Hartford on November 14th.
“In an effort to reach fans across the tri-state region, we are playing at multiple stadiums in our “Premiere” season,” said Mayer. “The fan interest for the New York area team has been immense and we want to expand our reach so that all fans may attend a “home” game and be able to embrace the New York Sentinels as their team.”
The New York Sentinels’ first game will be in Orlando on October 10th and will be broadcast on HDNet at 6:00 PM Pacific. The Sentinels’ first home game is October 29th against the Redwoods at Giants Stadium and will be broadcast on VERSUS.

At a press conference today, United Football League Commissioner Michael Huyghue announced the Florida franchise will be named the Tuskers and unveiled team uniforms showcasing the Tuskers' "Premiere" season colors of blue, black and white. The name "Tuskers" was selected after more than thirty thousand fan entries and interpretation from industry experts and an in-house creative team on what attributes the fans were seeking with their submissions. Florida Tuskers Head Coach Jim Haslett and Michael Kalt, Tampa Bay Rays' Senior Vice President of Development and Business Affairs, were also in attendance at the press event.
Commissioner Huyghue also announced that the Tuskers' game against the Las Vegas Locomotives on October 30th will be played at Tropicana Field, home of the Rays, and that the Rays have reached an agreement in principle to acquire an interest in the UFL's Florida franchise.
Previously, the UFL announced Miami-based GameWear Team Sports as the League's official uniform supplier. GameWear Team Sports is one of the leading athletic uniform outfitters in the country and has worked extensively in growing the sport of football on the grassroots level. Award-winning designer Ron Caruso of Purepartner created all the teams' uniforms using derivatives of the official League logo for all the designs while making each one distinctive.
"The inspiration for the "Premiere" season uniform design comes directly from the UFL shield and its foundation colors which represent "green grass", "blue sky" and silver for innovation," said Caruso. "Throughout the uniforms, we used the dimensional "arc" of the shield on the chest and supporting "arcs" on the sleeves and pants. The unique font of the numbers reinforces the shield's classic bold typeface with angles and dimensional treatments conveying depth and motion. The four uniform designs work together in a unified branded system, providing manufacturing efficiencies while allowing each team to retain its own unique and differentiated character
