The Minnesota Vikings have made a very large commitment to make their defense better in the near future by coming to terms on a trade that would send Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive end Jared Allen their way.
Allen will not be cheap, as reported by Yahoo! Sports: Citing a person with knowledge of the situation, the newspaper reported that the Vikings will send their first-round pick (No. 17 overall) and a pair of third-rounders in this weekend’s NFL Draft to the Chiefs for Allen. The teams also are expected to swap sixth-round picks. Those draft picks are just a portion of the heavy price Minnesota is paying to acquire Allen, who led the NFL in sacks with 15 1/2 last season despite missing the first two games while serving a league-mandated suspension. Kansas City had designated Allen as its franchise player, which would have guaranteed him a salary of $8.8 million next season - the average of the five highest-paid players at his position in the league.
Allen will become the highest-paid defensive player in league history when he signs his six-year contract worth around $74 million that includes $31 million in guarantees.
