Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Trufant agreed to a six-year, $50.2 million contract that would make him a Seattle Seahawk until 2013.

Trufant was never really going to look anywhere else, as reported by Gregg Bell of The Associated Press:

Agent Doug Hendrickson said the deal for the 11th overall draft choice out of Washington State in 2003 includes $20 million in guarantees. A $3 million roster bonus due in 2010 effectively means Trufant is due $28 million over the first three years of the contract, making him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league.

For the Seahawks, too. Seattle gets a lower salary cap number for Trufant in 2008, lessening the fiscal pressure the team had been feeling after signing free-agent running backs Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett, plus former Pro Bowl guard Mike Wahle. Last week, they asked four defensive players to restructure their contracts so Pro Bowl linebacker Lofa Tatupu could sign a deal through 2015 worth a potential $42 million.

That’s no accident. Ruskell was a scout and eventually the player personnel director for the Bucs for 17 years, ending in 2003 after the team’s championship season. His chief deputy, Seahawks vice president for player personnel Ruston Webster, worked 19 years for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before arriving in Seattle in 2005.

Trufant is planning on getting married this weekend and his fiancée, Jessica Rankin, claimed she could never have thought to have received a better wedding gift.

Last off season saw cornerback Nate Clements sigh a deal that spanned eight years and was worth $80 million with the San Francisco 49ers. Just last week, the Oakland Raiders traded with the Atlanta Falcons for cornerback DeAngelo Hall and then preceeded to give him a seven-year deal worth $70 million.

Head coach Mike Holmgren claimed that the deal had to get done now.

Trufant will fit well under coach Jim Mora who will take over the team after the 2008 reguar season.

Trufant had been tagged as Seattle’s franchise player and would have had a contract for one-year worth $9,465,000.

Team president Tim Ruskell claimed that this new deal still leaves them enough room to sign a kicker to replace Josh Brown to a $3-4 million contract.
